New London, NH: This fall, the Center for the Arts invites you to honor Edward Gorey’s centennial in a fittingly peculiar way: The Edward Gorey House 2025 All Ages Halloween Envelope Art Contest. Our creative space will be open for the public from 10am to 2pm on October 26th.
Edward Gorey was an artist of many talents. His literary work is easily recognizable by its ability to evoke a sense of unease while simultaneously incorporating a touch of dark humor that keeps readers engaged and returning for more. He also designed prints, etchings, and holograms, created animated works, and left his mark on Broadway. The Edward Gorey House in Cape Cod, formerly the artist’s personal residence, continues to honor his extraordinary imagination.
As we commemorate what would have been his centennial birthday, we honor his contributions to the art world, with the aspiration that his legacy will inspire the next generation of artists to create the most unsettling yet joyful sanctuary. Bring your favorite drawing tools, your imagination, a stamped envelope—and join a community of whimsical minds for a day of creation and celebration. The CFA will provide the space, inspiration, encouragement, and camaraderie. Come celebrate Gorey’s 100th birthday in true gothic-whimsical style. After all, what better way to honor the grandfather of gothic art than with a community of artists, a touch of mischief, and a garden full of peculiar imaginings?
