The Fox trot is the dance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This dance originated in 1913 when a vaudeville performer by the name of Harry Fox performed a little trot. This smooth and elegant dance is extremely versatile and can be danced to a variety of musical styles. It is the easiest smooth dance and is popular with beginners and advanced dancers alike. In this class you will learn the basics of Foxtrot. No experience necessary.

Description: This class meets one evening a week for four weeks. The object of this workshop is to learn the basics of watercolor painting by completing a sampler of techniques and an individual painting while enjoying a retreat of soothing music, tea and quiet company. Painting techniques including washes, glazing, dry brush and wet on wet applications which will be demonstrated. Students will learn how to stretch paper and the essentials of color mixing. You will be guided through techniques to help you understand light and shadow, value and composition while working from your own reference or one provided for you. Students are encouraged to bring a photograph or select a photograph to use as a reference to create a painting after completing their sampler. Participants are encouraged to bring any supplies or images needed to individualize the artistic process.

This class will focus on still life subject matter. The instructor will go over techniques in general and also work individually with each of the students. One class may be outdoors depending on weather. Students will be encouraged to come up with their own unique interpretation of the subject in front of them. There will be a short presentation on related work by other artists at the beginning of class and a supportive critique at the end. The class is open to all levels. Basic materials list include, soft pastels and sanded paper. Students are encouraged to bring their own easel.

The Rumba is often referred to as the “dance of love”. It is a non-progressive dance which features a hip action known as “Cuban Motion”. It is danced to slow, romantic music with a Latin beat. Rumba is derived from the Afro-Caribbean dance “Son” and has been popular in this country as a ballroom dance since the 1930’s. No experience necessary.

The Waltz grew out of the Germanic dances of the 17th and 18th century. Waltz was the first dance in which the man and lady danced with body contact, and was considered quite scandalous in its day. Waltz is characterized by a lovely rise and fall action. Waltz has an elegant gracefulness with a romantic feel. No experience necessary. 











Making the Ordinary Extraordinary - Painting Light in Watercolor with Robert O'Brien at Whipple Hall

Learn how to paint “the light”! This 2 day workshop will explore techniques on how to achieve spectacular light effects from ordinary images through the use of light and shadow. Subject matter will range from landscape, flowers, to close focus studies of architectural and agricultural motifs. Composition and values will be explored in this workshop. All levels of painting ability are welcome. Students will work from photo reference. Some drawing experience is recommended. There will be a critique and class discussion at the end of the workshop.

The “Cha Cha” was introduced to the United States in the early 1950’s and promptly sparked a dance craze. Cuban in origin, the Cha Cha evolved from a slow version of Mambo called “Triple Mambo”. It is a fun, flirtatious dance which emphasizes Cuban Motion and rhythm expressed throughout the body. No experience necessary.
