​Social Dances at Whipple Hall! 
Every 3rd Saturday of the Month
Dance lesson: 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Social dance: 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm 


Have you ever watched those television dance competitions and thought, "I'd like to try that?" Have you participated in our ballroom dance workshops and are looking to put the skills you've learned to the test? Center for the Arts and instructors from the Newport Ballroom have the answers for you! Come to our monthly social dances at Whipple Hall the 3rd Saturday of every month and enjoy an evening of music, socializing and DANCE!

Dance lessons will be available from 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm followed by social dance. $10 includes lesson and entry to the dance. All levels of experience welcome!

Painting Portraiture Made Easy with Tatiana Yanovskaya Sink

If you never thought you could draw and paint portraits, this is the workshop for you! By learning the basic approach for painting the human head, you will gain confidence in understanding the structure of the human head and features.

This workshop will focus on simple blocking-in techniques including all visual elements like values, drawing/composition, color temperature, and varieties of edges based on the principles of direct painting.

At the beginning of the workshop, students will study drawing and painting of essential forms and features of the human head comprised of studies of a human skull and cast, monochromatic painting, then gradually moving on to the full color flesh painting. Advanced students will focus on several approaches of painting portraiture and design. This workshop will focus on what to look at first before painting.

Instructor will provide demos and one-on-one direction as students draw and paint from life of a posed model.

West Coast Swing for Beginners with Natalie Mavor Miles

The West Coast Swing was born in California during the 1940’s. West Coast Swing is smooth and danced in a slot. It can be danced to a wide range of music including Rhythm and Blues, Country Western, Disco, Rock and Pop.

Abstract Painting Workshop with Barbara Danser

This workshop will include instruction in Objective and Non-Objective Abstraction. Objective Abstraction in art indicates a departure from reality in the depiction of a subject. The class will begin by focusing on the abstraction of objective subjects, such as the landscape and still life, during which each artist will determine their abstracting style. Artists will continue into Non-Objective work, exploring their inner vision through metaphorical responses to verbal prompts and discussions. An emphasis will be on enhancing each artist’s freedom of creative vision in a supportive group environment. There will be demonstrations of innovative painting techniques, discussions about the basics of “good art” and the similarities between representational and abstract work. Class will be held in a studio environment. Oil, pastel and water media artists are welcome.

Rumba for Beginners with Natalie Mavor Miles

The Rumba is often referred to as the “dance of love”. It is a non-progressive dance which features a hip action known as “Cuban Motion”. It is danced to slow, romantic music with a Latin beat. Rumba is derived from the Afro-Caribbean dance “Son” and has been popular in this country as a ballroom dance since the 1930’s. No experience necessary.

Tango for Beginners with Natalie Mavor Miles

The Tango evolved as a ballroom dance from the sultry Argentine Tango danced in the bordellos of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It emerged as a highly passionate dance, one that the respectable classes of society shunned. The American style Tango is characterized by a close hold and sharp movements and has a staccato feel. No experience necessary.

Cha Cha for Beginners with Natalie Mavor Miles

The “Cha Cha Cha” was introduced to the United States in the early 1950’s and promptly sparked a dance craze. Cuban in origin, the Cha Cha evolved from a slow version of Mambo called “Triple Mambo”. It is a fun, flirtatious dance which emphasizes Cuban Motion and rhythm expressed throughout the body. No experience necessary.

Viennese Waltz for Beginners with Natalie Mavor Miles

The Viennese Waltz dates back to the early 1700’s in Europe. Like the Waltz, many considered the dance to be immoral. It is characterized by its speed, (approximately twice as fast as Waltz), and features a series of left and right turns as the couple whirls around the dance floor. The faster music requires dancers to have greater technique. No experience necessary.
